And now, the last airport, the flight back to Chennai, the return to the ship. Beckmann heard a kid talk about getting photographed atop a camel and an elephant! At the same hotel! For once it wasn’t necessary to count the students. They’d surrounded him as he handed out boarding passes and when his hands emptied, the counting was over. But one bit of business remained for the so-called wise man, a moment of grace and forgiveness. It was about the student who’d kept them waiting at Fort Agra. He’d avoided her and she, no doubt, had avoided him. He had some people to write up and so did Post: students drunk and hooting near the cremation site. Darlene’s food poisoning took her to a hospital where the doctor proposed to keep her for three days. She’d miss the ship’s departure from Chennai. That meant she’d have to fly to Singapore and someone would have to volunteer to stay with her in Varanasi and then accompany her back to Chennai. Then Tommy had a talk with the doctor and she was released. Compared to this, Melissa’s infraction—tardiness returning to a bus on a field trip—seemed slight. He found her among a group of other students and called her off to one side.

“I’ve been thinking about what happened back at Fort Agra,” he said. “And I wanted to tell you that I’ve decided not to write you up.”

He’d expected a nod, a note of thanks. But, no, she flared up. She was angry. She’d been angry and she stayed that way.

“Write me up? For what?”

That was the end of it. He had forgiven her, but she had not forgiven him for abandoning her inside the fort. One short. He was still one student short.
